Lower Spiral Tunnel Viewpoint

At the Spiral Tunnels Viewpoint in Yoho National Park, travelers will get a fascinating glimpse into one of the most impressive feats of railway engineering in North America. Built in the early 1900s to safely navigate the steep Kicking Horse Pass, the Spiral Tunnels are still in active use today. From the viewpoint, guests can learn how the tunnels were carved into the mountains in a figure-eight pattern to reduce the grade of the track, making it safer for trains to travel through the rugged terrain. If timing is right, visitors may even see a train enter one tunnel and reappear from another—sometimes with the front and end visible at the same time!Your guide will share the remarkable history behind the tunnels’ construction, including the challenges faced by early railway workers and the role this route played in connecting Canada from coast to coast. Cool Banff wants to make your searches as relevant as possible. That's why we offer many ways to help you find the right experiences for you.

On some pages, you can select how to sort the results we display and also use filter options to see only those search results that meet your chosen preferences. You'll see explanations of what those sort options mean when you select them.

If you see a Badge of Excellence label, the award is based on average review ratings, share of bookings with a review, and number of bookings through Cool Banff over a 12-month period.

The importance of any one factor over any other in a sort order varies, and the balance is constantly being reviewed and adjusted. We're always updating our systems and testing new ways to refine and improve your results to make them as relevant as possible to meet your needs.
